“Philips had als doel om in 2020 CO2-neutraal te zijn. Dat hebben we bereikt. Ook hadden we de ambitie om 100% gebruik te maken van groene energie. Ook dat is gelukt.”

Dat vertelde Simon Braaksma in een interview met High Tech Campus. En hij kan het weten; als Senior Director Sustainability heeft hij een belangrijke bijdrage geleverd aan het halen van de duurzaamheidsdoelstellingen van Philips, onder meer door de deelname in Windpark Krammer in Zeeland. Dat voorziet heel Philips in Nederland van elektriciteit; van Amsterdam tot Drachten, maar ook Best en de High Tech Campus in Eindhoven:

“Dit was vroeger een topgeheime onderzoekslocatie van Philips. Nu werken hier meer dan 12.000 mensen in 235 hightechbedrijven aan toekomstige technologieën en innovaties. Philips is nog steeds de grootste bewoner van de Campus”, aldus interviewer Ingelou Stol van High Tech Campus.

Gezamenlijk CO2-uitstoot terugdringen

Samenwerking met een organisatie als High Tech Campus is dan ook voor Philips een belangrijke manier om de ambitieuze duurzaamheidsdoelstellingen te halen: “Het mooie is, dat Philips en High Tech Campus hiermee op één lijn zitten. Dus werken we nauw samen. We geloven sowieso in samenwerking met partners om in de toekomst nog verder te verduurzamen”, aldus Simon.

“We hebben onlangs nog een programma aangekondigd om nauwer samen te gaan werken met onze leveranciers; gezamenlijk kunnen we een grotere impact maken dan alleen, als het gaat om het terugdringen van CO2-uitstoot. Onze ambities zijn in lijn met het Parijs scenario om de opwarming van de aarde tot 1,5 graden te beperken.”

“Hoe realistisch zijn die doelstellingen?”, wilde Ingelou weten. Simon: “We zullen er natuurlijk niet van vandaag op morgen zijn. Het gaat veel hard werk vergen van iedereen bij Philips. Maar als je om je heen kijkt op de High Tech Campus, dan kunnen we toch trots zijn op het feit dat onze activiteiten ook hier draaien op Zeeuwse wind.”

Uitfaseren fossiele brandstoffen

“Een van onze volgende ambities, en dat zal wel echt een uitdaging worden, is het uitfaseren van fossiele brandstoffen. Dat is een complexer proces, maar ook duurder, dus hebben we een langere terugverdientijd. Maar als de ambitie er is, en daar zijn we heel expliciet in geweest, dan denk ik dat dit ons ook wel weer gaat lukken.”

Teddy Heerbaart doet er binnen Philips Circular Equipment alles aan om goede onderdelen van medische apparatuur niet verloren te laten gaan, maar juist in te zetten voor de toekomst. “Bij ons krijgt medische apparatuur een tweede, en soms zelfs een derde leven.”  
 
"Al bij de eerste design-schets moet je nadenken over circulariteit." Samen met haar team is Design Strategist Aylin Groenewoud elke dag bezig om de producten en diensten van Philips nog groener te maken.

Philips heeft een missie om in 2030 het leven te verbeteren van minimaal 400 miljoen mensen in achtergestelde gemeenschappen. Luc De Clerck werkt al sinds jaar en dag aan projecten om dat voor elkaar te krijgen: “Philips Community Life Centers dragen bij aan de oplossing van een enorm probleem in afgelegen gebieden: hoge moeder- en kindersterfte.”

"At Philips we had the goal of being carbon neutral by 2020. We achieved that. We also had the ambition to use 100% green energy. We achieved that too."

That's what Simon Braaksma said during an interview with High Tech Campus. And he should know; as Senior Director Sustainability he has made a significant contribution to the achievement of Philips' sustainability targets, including by participating in Wind farm Krammer. The 34 turbines in Zeeland supply all of Philips in the Netherlands with electricity; from Amsterdam to Drachten, but also Best and the High Tech Campus in Eindhoven:

"High Tech Campus used to be a top-secret research site of Philips. Now more than 12,000 people in 235 high-tech companies work here on future technologies and innovations. Philips is still the biggest resident of the Campus," said interviewer Ingelou Stol of High Tech Campus.

Reducing CO2 emissions together

Collaborating with an organization such as High Tech Campus is therefore an important way for Philips to achieve its ambitious sustainability targets: "The great thing is that Philips and High Tech Campus are on the same page. So we work closely together. We believe in cooperating with partners anyway to become even more sustainable in the future," Simon said.

"We recently announced another program to work more closely with our suppliers; together we can make a bigger impact than alone, when it comes to reducing CO2 emissions. Our ambitions are in line with the Paris Agreement to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees."

"How realistic are these targets?," Ingelou wanted to know. Simon: "We won't get there overnight, of course. It will require a lot of hard work from everyone at Philips. But if you look around at the High Tech Campus, we can be proud of the fact that our operations here are running on, what we call, wind from Zeeland.”

Phasing out fossil fuels

“What we need to do next is phase out fossil fuels, and that will be a real challenge. It is a more complex process and also more expensive, so we have a longer payback period. But if the ambition is there, and we've been very explicit about that, then I think we'll succeed again."
