Philips pleit voor toegankelijke en duurzame gezondheidszorg tijdens World Economic Forum 2024

De gezondheidszorg moet toegankelijk en betaalbaar zijn voor iedereen die het nodig heeft. Dat was de hoofdboodschap van diverse sprekers van Philips vorige week tijdens het World Economic Forum in Davos. In verschillende artikelen, sessies en paneldiscussies legden onze collega’s de nadruk op duurzaamheid en innovatie om die toegankelijkheid te bewerkstelligen. “We moeten samenwerken om verandering mogelijk te maken”, zei CEO Roy Jakobs bijvoorbeeld tijdens een sessie.

Op de website van het World Economic Forum verschenen in de aanloop naar het evenement twee opiniestukken namens Roy Jakobs en Deeptha Khanna, Chief Business Leader, Personal Health bij Philips. Het eerste artikel heeft de titel ‘AI in healthcare: Buckle up for change, but read this before takeoff’ en richt zich op het omarmen van de kracht van AI in de gezondheidszorg op een verantwoorde en rechtvaardige manier. “We moeten AI omarmen en de onmiddellijke voordelen benutten, maar weloverwogen stappen nemen om de risico's te beperken”, schrijven de auteurs.

Het tweede opiniestuk, "Women’s healthcare needs are changing: How do we meet them where they are?", is geschreven door Deeptha. Het artikel bespreekt de enorme verschillen in de behandeling van de behoeften van vrouwen en het belang van het leveren van zorg aan hen die op maat gemaakt en schaalbaar is. Deeptha: “We moeten luisteren naar vrouwen, de unieke gezondheidsbelemmeringen waarmee ze te maken hebben begrijpen en onszelf uitdagen om te innoveren op manieren die hen helpen waar ze zijn.”

Shez Partovi, Chief Innovation & Strategy Officer en Chief Business Leader of Enterprise Informatics, nam deel aan een paneldiscussie hoe je technologie kunt inzetten om zorg toegankelijker te maken. Hij noemde daarbij het voorbeeld van Philips Lumify, waar kunstmatige intelligentie het gebruik simpeler maakt. Het apparaat is sneller toegankelijk, zonder maandenlange training, voor minderbedeelde gemeenschappen wereldwijd.

Volgens Shez is er nog veel werk aan de winkel om de gaten in de gezondheid te dichten. Meer dan ooit worden gemeenschappen over de hele wereld geconfronteerd met uitdagingen die een rechtvaardige toegang tot zorg in de weg staan; van beleids- en financieringsbarrières tot distributieproblemen.

“Dit is waar we een enorme kans hebben: om AI-gestuurde innovaties en informatica op het gebied van gezondheid te ontwikkelen die een blijvende, positieve impact hebben op mensen in gebieden met weinig middelen.”

Why healthcare must lead in climate mitigation

Deze sessie ging over de dringende behoefte aan klimaatgerichte gezondheidszorgmodellen en de decarbonisatie van de gezondheidszorg. Robert Metzke, hoofd Duurzaamheid, sprak in deze sessie over de uitdagingen om duurzaamheid bespreekbaar te maken in de gezondheidszorg, omdat de zorg veel uitdagingen heeft. Volgens Robert is een gezondheidsgerichte aanpak nodig om de klimaatverandering tegen te gaan.

Robert: “We kunnen niet doorgaan met het behandelen van patiënten terwijl we de planeet vervuilen. Daarom werken we bij Philips samen met wereldwijde belanghebbenden, waaronder toonaangevende ziekenhuizen en zorgaanbieders, om ervoor te zorgen dat gezondheidszorg betaalbaar, duurzaam en toegankelijk is voor iedereen - niet alleen voor de gelukkigen.”

In dit panelgesprek spraken de deelnemers over wat er nodig is om effectieve publiek-private partnerschappen te stimuleren om maatschappelijke doelen te bereiken. Jan-Willem Scheijgrond, Vice-President Government and Public Affairs, nam deel namens Philips en sprak over het proces achter de partnerschappen bij Philips.

Voor Philips was het bijvoorbeeld logisch om te kijken welke producten er zijn en hoe ze bijdragen aan het behalen van maatschappelijke doelen, maar kwam er langzaam achter dat er meer bij kwam kijken om die doelen te behalen. According to Shez, there is still much work to be done to bridge gaps in healthcare. Communities worldwide are facing challenges hindering just access to healthcare, from policy and funding barriers to distribution issues. "This is where we have a tremendous opportunity: to develop AI-driven innovations and health informatics that have a lasting positive impact on people in resource-limited areas."

Why healthcare must lead in climate mitigation

This session addressed the urgent need for climate-focused healthcare models and the decarbonization of healthcare. Robert Metzke, Head of Sustainability, spoke about the challenges of making sustainability a conversation in healthcare, given the industry's complexities. According to Robert, a health-centric approach is needed to combat climate change.

Robert states, "We cannot continue treating patients while polluting the planet. That's why, at Philips, we collaborate with global stakeholders, including leading hospitals and healthcare providers, to ensure healthcare is affordable, sustainable, and accessible to everyone—not just the fortunate ones."

From Aspiration to Action: how innovative public private partnerships advance progress on the SDG's

In this panel discussion, participants discussed what is needed to foster effective public-private partnerships to achieve societal goals. Jan-Willem Scheijgrond, Vice-President Government and Public Affairs, represented Philips and spoke about the process behind Philips' partnerships.

For Philips, it initially made sense to examine their products and how they contribute to societal goals. However, they gradually realized that more was needed to achieve these goals.
