Philips en ASML hebben een overeenkomst getekend waarbij circa 100 Philips medewerkers in dienst worden genomen door ASML. Na goedkeuring van de ondernemingsraden zal de overgang in de tweede helft van 2023 definitief worden.

Met de nieuwe groeistrategie van Philips, die eerder dit jaar gepresenteerd is, heeft het bedrijf strategische keuzes gemaakt in haar activiteiten. Eén van de activiteiten die als gevolg van deze keuzes wordt afgebouwd, is het aanbieden van engineering-diensten aan derde partijen.

Mechatronica experts van Philips ondersteunen bijvoorbeeld externe semiconductor-bedrijven, waaronder ASML en Zeiss. De werkrelatie tussen de engineeringtak van Philips en ASML gaat terug tot de jaren 80, toen ASM Lithography werd opgericht. De laatste jaren ondersteunden de engineers van Philips bij de ontwikkeling van de positioning module in de machines van ASML.

“Onderdeel van ons plan is een gewijzigd innovatiemodel, waarbij we innovatie verplaatsen naar onze bedrijfsonderdelen. Het aanbieden van engineeringdiensten aan externe klanten past niet langer in de strategische focus en wordt afgebouwd,” legt Nico Jonkers, Head of Innovation Engineering bij Philips uit. “In het belang van onze klanten en partners zoeken wij naar oplossingen om hun activiteiten en onze commitments zo goed mogelijk in te vullen. Door middel van deze constructie met ASML verzekeren zij de voortgang van projecten en het geïntegreerde kennis behoud voor ASML. Wij zetten ons in om medewerkers zo goed mogelijk van werk naar werk te begeleiden, en talent voor de regio te behouden. De overeenkomst met ASML past daar precies in en biedt deze medewerkers nieuwe kansen bij ASML in hun belangrijke vakgebied.”

Innovatie blijft kern van de groeistrategie van Philips

Philips blijft jaarlijks meer dan 1,7 miljard euro investeren in innovatie. Dat is ten opzichte van andere bedrijven in de medische technologie industrie bovengemiddeld. Een groot deel van dit budget, zo’n 700 miljoen euro, wordt rechtstreeks geïnvesteerd in Nederland. Hierdoor blijft Nederland het leidende middelpunt van de wereldwijde activiteiten van Philips, met drie essentiële kernactiviteiten (innovatie, productie en het hoofdkantoor) en vier grote vestigingen (Eindhoven, Best, Drachten en Amsterdam).

Een belangrijke stap is om direct toepasbare innovaties naar de bedrijfsonderdelen te brengen die dichter bij patiënten, consumenten en klanten staan. Daarom worden de business units verantwoordelijk voor het gehele onderzoeks- en productontwikkelingstraject, en zal 90% van de R&D activiteiten daar plaatsvinden (was voorheen 70%).  Hierdoor wordt de innovatiekracht van deze bedrijfsonderdelen verder vergroot en kunnen de multidisciplinaire teams nauwer samenwerken met ziekenhuizen en andere partners om nog meer mens- en patiëntgericht te innoveren.

Philips Innovation Engineering zal zich in de toekomst met name richten op het ondersteunen van bedrijfsonderdelen van Philips met hun expertise op het gebied Data & AI, software en hardware engineering, evenals de digitale platformen om de health care proposities te ondersteunen in de cloud.

Philips and ASML have signed an agreement in which about 100 Philips employees will transfer to ASML. After approval from the Works Councils, the transition will become final in the second half of 2023.

With the new strategy of Philips presented earlier this year, the company has made strategic choices. One of the activities to phase out offering engineering services to third parties.

For example, mechatronics experts of Philips are currently supporting external semiconductor companies, including ASML and Zeiss. The working relationship between Philips engineers and ASML dates back to the 1980s, when ASM Lithography was founded. In recent years, Philips engineers supported the development of the positioning module in ASML's machines.

"Part of our plan is a modified innovation model, moving innovation to our business units. Offering engineering services to third parties no longer fits into our strategic focus and is being phased out," said Nico Jonkers, Head of Innovation Engineering at Philips. Through this agreement with ASML, we ensure the progress of projects and integrated knowledge retention for ASML. We are committed to guiding employees from job to job and retaining talent for the region. The agreement with ASML fits right into that and offers these employees new opportunities at ASML."

Innovation remains at the core of the Philips strategy

Philips continues to invest more than 1.7 billion euros annually in innovation. This is above average compared to other companies in the medical technology industry. A large part of this budget, approximately 700 million euros, is invested directly in the Netherlands. This keeps the Netherlands the leading center of Philips global activities, with three essential core activities (innovation, production and headquarters) and four major sites (Eindhoven, Best, Drachten and Amsterdam).

An important step is to bring directly applicable innovations to the business units closer to patients, consumers and customers. Therefore, the business units will be responsible for the entire research and product development process, and 90% of R&D activities will take place there (was previously 70%).  This will further increase the innovation power of these business units and enable the multidisciplinary teams to work more closely with hospitals and other partners to innovate even more people- and patient-centric.

Philips Innovation Engineering will support Philips business units with their expertise in Data & AI, software and hardware engineering, as well as the platforms for modules and components and digital platforms to support healthcare propositions in the cloud.
