Gerard en Anton Awards: feest van innovatie en ondernemerschap

Het is elk jaar weer een feestje: de uitreiking van de Gerard en Anton Awards aan de 10 meest veelbelovende startups uit Eindhoven. Geselecteerd vanwege hun combinatie van innovatieve techniek en uitstekend gevoel voor ondernemerschap. Innovation Origins reikt de prijs al sinds 2014 uit en dit jaar gebeurde dat onder het toeziend oog van Hans de Jong, President Philips Nederland én juryvoorzitter van de naar de gebroeders Philips vernoemde awards. 

“Philips begon meer dan honderd jaar geleden ook als een soort van startup”, aldus De Jong. “Gerard was een werktuigbouwkundige die met geld van zijn vader een fabriekje begon. Alleen kreeg hij zijn spullen niet verkocht, waarop vader tegen Anton zei: Jij moet je broer maar eens gaan helpen.” En zo geschiedde. De Jong: “Deze mannen hadden iets in zich, waardoor ze het fundament legden voor het Philips van nu.”

Ondernemerschap stimuleren

En juist dat Philips van nu is er ook om jonge startups verder te helpen. De Jong: “Er is veel talent aanwezig in Brainport Eindhoven. Zij krijgen met de Gerard & Anton Awards een mooi podium en een positieve impuls. Brainport Eindhoven is wereldwijd een groeiend symbool voor succesvolle hightech maakindustrie. Juist nu het goed gaat moeten we aan de kiemen van succes voor de toekomst werken. Startups zijn noodzakelijk om het succes te kunnen continueren. Daarom is het belangrijk dat er ook nieuwe bedrijven blijven ontstaan. Het past in het Brainport-DNA dat de ervaren bedrijven ze daarbij helpen. Op deze manier proberen we innovatie en ondernemerschap in de regio verder te stimuleren.”

De innovaties en de startups zelf zijn daarbij heel verschillend. Van elektrische bussen van Ebusco, via een braille toetsenbord voor smartphones van Hable, naar Incooling. Incooling gebruikt CERN technologie om alleen de chips te koelen, niet het hele datacenter en op die manier flink te besparen op energieverbruik.

Keukentafelgesprek

Ook een van de winnaars is Mentech. Deze startup ontwikkelde een radar die emoties zichtbaar maakt bij mensen met een beperking. Dit helpt zorgverleners bij het goed met hen omgaan, wat dan weer bijdraagt aan het welzijn en geluk van de cliënt. Oprichter Erwin Meinders werkte eerder tien jaar bij Philips en later bij Holst Centre en TNO, maar ook is hij al heel lang vrijwilliger bij een zorgorganisatie voor mensen met een verstandelijke beperking. “Daar ontstond het idee”, vertelt hij tijdens de uitreiking. “Voor verstandelijk beperkte mensen is verbale communicatie vaak lastig. Wij hebben een systeem ontwikkeld waarmee we door sensormetingen en gedragsmodellen de spanningsopbouw kunnen bepalen.” Meinders werkt in zijn bedrijf samen met Reon Smits, zijn CTO die hij via zijn netwerk leerde kennen. Smits: “We voerden eigenlijk alleen een keukentafelgesprek voor we besloten samen in zee te gaan. Een mooi voorbeeld van de Eindhovense manier. We vullen elkaar goed aan.” Om daar lachend aan toe te voegen: “Zo bekeken zijn wij eigenlijk een heel klein beetje Gerard en Anton.”

De Gerard & Anton Awards zijn een initiatief van Innovation Origins samen met de High Tech Campus Eindhoven en worden gesteund door de Gemeente Eindhoven, EY, Brainport Development, V.O. en Philips. Evenals vorig jaar ontvingen de winnaars allemaal een SENSEO®, zodat ze op kantoor altijd kunnen beschikken over een lekkere kop koffie.  SENSEO® is door Philips en Jacobs Douwe Egberts in 2001 geïntroduceerd en sindsdien niet meer weg te denken uit de Nederlandse keuken. Een belangrijke technische innovatie die door samenwerking tot stand is gekomen en ook commercieel een groot succes is geworden.

Every year it’s a celebration: the presentation of the Gerard and Anton Awards to the 10 most promising startups from Eindhoven. Selected for their combination of innovative technology and an excellent sense of entrepreneurship. Innovation Origins has been awarding the prize since 2014 and this year it was done under the watchful eye of Hans de Jong, President Philips Netherlands and chairman of the jury of the awards named after the Philips brothers. 

"Philips started more than a hundred years ago as a kind of startup," says De Jong. "Gerard was a mechanical engineer who started a small factory with his father's money. But he didn't get his product sold, so father said to his other son Anton: "You should go help your brother." And so it happened. De Jong: "These men laid the foundation for today's Philips."

Stimulating entrepreneurship

This Philips of today is there too to help young startups. De Jong: "Brainport Eindhoven contains a lot of talent. The Gerard & Anton Awards give this talent a nice stage and a positive impulse. Brainport Eindhoven is a worldwide growing symbol for successful high-tech manufacturing industry. Especially in times when all goes well, we have to plant the seeds of success for the future. Startups are necessary to be able to continue success. That's why it's so important that new companies continue to emerge. It's part of the Brainport DNA that experienced companies help them to develop and grow. In this way we try to further stimulate innovation and entrepreneurship in this region."

The winning innovations and the startups themselves are very different from each other. From electric buses from Ebusco, via a Braille keyboard for smartphones from Hable, to Incooling. Incooling uses CERN technology to only cool the chips, not the entire data center, and thus make significant savings in energy consumption.

Kitchen table

One of the other winners is Mentech. This startup developed the Emoradar, a product that makes emotions of people with mental disability visible. This helps caregivers to provide better care, which in turn contributes to the well-being and happiness of the client. Founder Erwin Meinders previously worked at Philips for 10 years and later at Holst Centre and TNO, but he is also a volunteer at a healthcare institution for people with a mental disability. "That's where the idea came from", he says after winning the award. "For mentally disabled people, verbal communication is often difficult. We have developed a system for determining their stress level by means of sensor measurements and behavioral models". In his company, Meinders works with Reon Smits, his CTO, which he got to know through his network. Smits: "We actually only had a kitchen table discussion before we decided to work together. A good example of the Eindhoven way. We complement each other well." To add, laughingly: "From this point of view, we're actually just a little bit Gerard and Anton."

Coffee

The Gerard & Anton Awards are an initiative of Innovation Origins together with the High Tech Campus Eindhoven and supported by the Municipality of Eindhoven, EY, Brainport Development, V.O. and Philips. Just like last year, the winners all received a SENSEO®, so that they can always have a nice cup of coffee in their office.  SENSEO® was introduced by Philips and Jacobs Douwe Egberts in 2001 and has been an integral part of the Dutch kitchen ever since. This is an important technical innovation that has come about through collaboration and has also become a great commercial success.
