Het nieuw te ontwikkelen park in het Emmasingelkwadrant wordt een groen pareltje en een nieuwe hotspot in het centrum van Eindhoven. In twee hectare groen komen bewoners en bezoekers samen om de drukte van de stad even aan zich voorbij laten gaan. En het wordt de thuisplek van het nieuwe kunstwerk van Gerard Philips. Netty van de Kamp en Adriaan Geuze vertellen over de artistieke waarde van dit kunstwerk en de bijdrage die het levert aan de omgevingskwaliteit van deze bijzondere locatie. 

Waar de standbeelden van Anton en Frits Philips al jaren prijken zijn in het centrum van Eindhoven, bleef Gerard wat in de schaduw van het verleden. Daar moest verandering in komen. Philips schonk daarom twee jaar geleden dit kunstwerk aan de stad en haar inwoners. Het nieuwe kunstwerk is niet zomaar een standbeeld. Het is een eerbetoon aan de man die de regio Eindhoven heeft gevormd tot wat het nu is: een innovatieve en creatieve broedplaats.

Artistieke erkenning

De vraag ontstond voor een kunstwerk dat recht deed aan de persoon Gerard, maar daar bleef het niet bij. Het was snel duidelijk dat het resultaat vooral een eerbetoon moest worden aan Gerard als ingenieur, fabrikant én als mens en aan zijn bijdrage aan de ontwikkeling van de regio. Het kunstwerk is vooral bedoeld om emoties op te roepen, een verhaal te vertellen én te inspireren. Het is een artistieke erkenning aan de bijdrage aan de creatieve en innovatieve ontwikkeling van de regio.

Gelaagdheid

“De persoon, de verhalen, de betekenis, het verleden en de toekomst zij gevangen in dit kunstwerk. De kracht van dit beeld zit in de gelaagdheid. Zelfs als je geen band hebt met de persoon Gerard Philips, of het bedrijf, dan nog kun je enorm van dit kunstwerk genieten”, zegt Netty van de Kamp. Zij kreeg als adviseur Kunst & Ruimte bij Kunstloc Brabant het verzoek van Philips om mee te denken over een passend kunstwerk in de openbare ruimte. Ook nam ze deel aan de kunstselectiecommissie, een brede groep vertegenwoordigers vanuit Philips, de gemeente en de culturele sector.

Innovatieve wereldspeler

De kracht van het kunstwerk is volgens Van de Kamp de optelsom van drie waarden. De eerste waarde is economisch van aard. “Het gaat niet zozeer over Gerard als persoon, maar over hoe hij aan de basis stond van een innovatief bedrijf dat uitgroeide tot een wereldspeler.” Gerard zorgde met zijn voortdurende innovaties voor een bedrijf dat veel werkgelegenheid bood in en rondom Eindhoven. Vanuit Philips ontstonden weer allerlei andere bedrijven, waardoor de regio Brainport inmiddels bekend staat als de slimste van Europa.

Maatschappelijke waarde

De tweede waarde van het beeld heeft te maken met die werkgelegenheid. Hoewel Philips uitgroeide tot mondiale speler had Gerard altijd oog voor de mensen in zijn bedrijf. Denk aan de sociale voorzieningen zoals het studiefonds of de bouw van het Philips-dorp. “Gerard zorgde goed voor zijn mensen. Dat sociaal-maatschappelijke aspect komt terug in dit beeld, omdat het een cadeau is aan de stad. Iedereen kan er straks van genieten en er een mening over hebben. Het is iconisch en zeer fotogeniek, maar dat laatste is vooral een leuke bijkomstigheid”, grapt Van de Kamp.

Duizend verhalen

De derde waarde zit in het stedenbouwkundige aspect. Dat is vooral het vakgebied van Adriaan Geuze. Sinds lange tijd is Geuze de stedenbouwkundige en Supervisor van de herontwikkeling van de Philipsfabrieken langs de West Corridor: Strijp S en T, Stadionbuurt, Hartje Eindhoven, Stadion en Emmsingelkwadrant.  “Het leuke aan dit deel van Eindhoven is dat de geschiedenis en het heden mooi samenkomen”, vertelt Geuze. “Het is voor Nederland uniek gebied met sterke identiteit en duizend verhalen.”

Verbinding

Volgens Geuze is het kunstwerk perfect voor deze locatie in het centrum. “Hij krijgt een plek in een park, waar mensen samenkomen. Precies zoals hij vroeger van zijn mensen hield.” De aard-tonen passen volgens Geuze goed in het groen en gaat het op in de natuur. “Daarnaast is de afmeting perfect in deze context. Het gaat om de juiste schaal. Er wordt hoog gebouwd en er komen bomen van 15 meter. Dan heb je een groot beeld nodig”, zegt hij. Het kunstwerk kijkt naar het westen toe, vanuit de stad naar Strijp. Geuze: “Het kijkt naar de toekomst. Zo leggen we de verbinding tussen oud en nieuw.”

Extra dimensie

Hoe je ook kijkt naar het kunstwerk, het geeft het park in de binnenstad een extra dimensie. Het brengt mensen samen en creëert zo een gevoel van saamhorigheid en verbondenheid. Het zorgt daarmee voor verbinding in de stad. Het laat zien waar we vandaan komen en inspireert om na te denken over de toekomst. Het kan dienen als motivatie om nieuwe ideeën te ontwikkelen en om te streven naar innovatie en vooruitgang, net zoals Gerard Philips dat altijd heeft gedaan.

The new park to be developed in the Emmasingelkwadrant will be a green gem and a new hotspot in the center of Eindhoven. In two hectares of greenery, residents and visitors will come together to take a break from the hustle and bustle of the city. And it will be home to Gerard Philips' new artwork. Netty van de Kamp and Adriaan Geuze talk about the artistic value of this artwork and the contribution it makes to the environmental quality of this special location. 

Where the statues of Anton and Frits Philips have adorned the center of Eindhoven for years, Gerard remained somewhat in the shadows of the past. This had to change. Philips thus donated this work of art to the city and its inhabitants two years ago. However, the new artwork is not just a statue. It is a tribute to the man who shaped the Eindhoven region into what it is today: an innovative and creative breeding ground.

Artistic recognition

The request arose for a work of art that did justice to Gerard as a person, but it did not stop there. It was soon clear that the result had to be a tribute to Gerard as an engineer, manufacturer and as a human being, and to his contribution to the development of the region. The artwork is primarily intended to evoke emotions, to tell a story and to inspire. It is an artistic recognition of the contribution to the creative and innovative development of the region.

Multi-layered

"The person, the stories, the meaning, the past and the future are captured in this artwork. The power of this sculpture is in its layering. Even if you have no connection with the person Gerard Philips, or the company, you can still enjoy this work of art immensely," says Netty van de Kamp. As a consultant at Kunstloc Brabant, she was asked by Philips to help think about a suitable work of art in the public space. She also participated in the art selection committee, a broad group of representatives from Philips, the municipality and the cultural sector.

Innovative world player

According to Van de Kamp, the power of the artwork is the sum of three values. The first value is economic in nature. "It is not so much about Gerard as a person, but about how he was at the foundation of an innovative company that grew into a world player." With his constant innovations, Gerard created a company that provided many jobs in and around Eindhoven. From Philips, all kinds of other companies emerged, which is why the Brainport region is now known as the smartest in Europe.

Social value

The second value of the sculpture has to do with those jobs. Although Philips grew into a global player, Gerard always had an interest in the people in his company. Think of the social services such as the study fund or the construction of the Philips village. "Gerard took good care of his people. That social aspect is reflected in this sculpture because it is a gift to the city. Everyone will soon be able to enjoy it and have an opinion about it. It is iconic and very photogenic, but the latter is mainly a nice bonus," jokes Van de Kamp.

A thousand stories

The third value is in the urban planning aspect. That is primarily Adriaan Geuze's field of expertise. For a long time, Geuze has been the urban planner and Supervisor of the redevelopment of the Philips factories along the West Corridor: Strijp S and T, Stadionbuurt, Hartje Eindhoven, Stadion and Emmsingelkwadrant.  "The nice thing about this part of Eindhoven is that history and present come together nicely," Geuze says. "It is an area unique to the Netherlands with a strong identity and a thousand stories."

Connection

According to Geuze, the artwork is perfect for this downtown location. "He gets a place in a park, where people come together. Exactly the way he used to love his people." According to Geuze, the earth tones fit well with the greenery and it blends in with nature. "In addition, the size is perfect in this context. It's about the right scale. There will be tall buildings and 15-foot trees. Then you need a big sculpture," he says. The artwork faces west, from the city toward Strijp. Geuze: "It looks toward the future. That's how we make the connection between old and new."

Extra dimension

No matter how you look at the artwork, it gives the downtown park an extra dimension. It brings people together, creating a sense of belonging and connection. In doing so, it creates a connection in the city. It shows where we come from and inspires us to think about the future. It can serve as motivation to develop new ideas and to strive for innovation and progress, just as Gerard Philips always did.
