Running with Lumify: Eindhoven marathon again testing ground for mobile ultrasound solution

During the Marathon Eindhoven, Sunday 13 October, Philips and Usono together tested Philips' mobile ultrasound solution, Lumify, in combination with Usono's ProbeFix Dynamic. In this way, the thigh muscles of three runners could be monitored during the duration of the 21.9-kilometre half marathon.

Because of the low weight (108 grams) and the possibility to connect the Philips Lumify to a smartphone, the riders could easily carry the ultrasound equipment. Daniëlle Hamelink, social media manager at Philips, tried it out as one of the three Lumify runners. Thanks to the high image quality, razor-sharp images were taken of her muscles during the run. Usono's ProbeFix stabilized the Philips Lumify on the body so that a recording could be made every kilometre.

It was all about testing Lumify and of course that's a bit different than other times when I run.

Good ultrasound image

"It took some time getting used to running with a Lumify attached to me", Daniëlle said after completing her half marathon. "I also got a lot of questions from spectators about the product and why I carried it.” She checked in early that day at the TU/e, where the device was attached to her leg and tested if the ultrasound image was correct. After a compliment from the researcher about her beautiful muscle and some tests with running on the treadmill, she was ready. "I didn't have a time in my mind that I necessarily wanted to finish in," she said afterwards. "This time it was all about testing Lumify. And of course that's something different than normal runs. But in the end I ran well with it, also thanks to the ProbeFix, and we were able to make good images of my muscles.”

In the end I ran well with it, also thanks to the ProbeFix Dynamic.

Impact on the body

The next step is to do scientific research on the results of the measurements during intensive endurance sports. These results will provide more insight into the processes that take place in the body during intensive exercise and what the impact of this is on the body.

The Eindhoven-based startup Usono is working with Philips and the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) on this new way of monitoring muscles with ultrasound. The collaboration is part of the 'Innovation Lab' of the marathon and contributes to the ambition to become the most innovative marathon in the world.
