The Philips Foundation and Ashoka have joined forces and together they went in search of fellows with meaningful ideas in the healthcare field. Philips' business knowledge and subject matter expertise is used to identify the obstacles faced by the fellows, and how their ideas can be further developed to increase their impact and provide access to healthcare to more people.
One of these fellows is Rita Melifonwu. Rita established Stroke Action Nigeria, an organization working to provide a comprehensive platform for accessible care for people who have suffered a stroke. Mark van Meggelen, senior director at Philips, supported her as strategic advisor for the past 3 months. Together, they looked into how Rita's impact plan could be further developed.
"Currently there are 5 centers offering advice to stroke victims for all of Nigeria's nearly 200 million inhabitants", says Rita Melifonwu. "Using the support provided by Ashoka and their expert network, I hope to have 25 centers operational within a year from now."
