Gerard & Anton Awards dragen bij aan unieke kracht van Brainport Eindhoven

Verkozen worden tot een van de meest kansrijke start-ups in de Brainport regio, dat betekent wat. Waar gemiddeld zo’n tien tot twintig procent van de start-ups blijvend succesvol is, ligt dat voor de oud-winnaars van de Gerard & Anton Awards rond de 75 procent. Op donderdag 31 augustus namen de tien nieuwste winnaars hun prijs dan ook vol trots in handen. Om blijvend te investeren in de unieke kracht van Brainport Eindhoven, een fijnmazig netwerk van onderliggend samenwerkende partijen, nodigt het gezondheidstechnologiebedrijf hen uit voor een jaarlijks Gerard & Anton diner in het Philips Museum.

Grondleggers van innovatie en ondernemerschap in Eindhoven

Van regeneratieve implantaten, tot virtuele collega’s gebaseerd op AI, tot techniek om je hersenen te trainen: stuk voor stuk werden de winnaars van de Gerard & Anton Awards 2023 als innovatief en ondernemend bestempeld. Uitgangspunten die ook synoniem staan voor de broers zelf sinds de start van Philips in 1891.

Tel daarbij op het maatschappelijke betrokken karakter van de ondernemers, en de grondslag voor Gerard & Anton Awards is gelegd. Philips is sinds de oprichting van de awards in 2014 een belangrijke partner in dit evenement. “Het past in ons DNA dat de meer ervaren bedrijven start-ups helpen waar nodig. Op die manier proberen we samen innovatie en ondernemerschap in de regio verder te stimuleren”, aldus Sylvia van Es, President Philips Nederland. Om deze community te versterken, nodigt Philips de winnaars uit voor een jaarlijks Gerard & Anton diner in het Philips Museum. Dat zal een gelegenheid zijn om in een informele setting van elkaar en van de boegbeelden uit de wereld van high-tech te leren. “Op die manier willen we samen blijven investeren in de unieke kracht van Brainport, en bouwen we samen voort op wat ooit bij Gerard is begonnen.”

Unieke kracht van Brainport

Uit onderzoek van Innovation Origins en Strategy Unit blijkt dat gemiddeld genomen twee tot drie van de tien start-ups langer dan vijf jaar bestaat. Onder de winnaars van de Gerard & Anton Awards sinds 2014, geldt dit voor acht van de tien start-ups. De verklaring hiervoor kan liggen in de unieke kracht van Brainport: een netwerk van samenwerkende bedrijven op het gebied van high-tech, het onderwijs en de overheid. “We kennen de start-ups al vanuit ons netwerk. Dat maakt dat we ze niet alleen vanaf papier kunnen beoordelen, maar simpelweg door dagelijkse sociale interactie,” aldus Bert-Jan Woertman, oprichter van de Gerard & Anton Awards en Directeur van Mikrocentrum. 

Tien nieuwe winnaars

De winnaar van 2023 zijn: Antennex, VivArt-X, Integer Technologies, Mantispectra, GrAI Matter Labs, Gilbert Technologies, Alphabeats, FononTech, Neople, en Tibo Energy. Zij namen hun Gerard & Anton Award in ontvangst op de High Tech Campus in Eindhoven. Daarnaast was er een speciale prijs voor Pakt: dit beloftevolle studententeam dat opereert vanuit TU Delft en TU Eindhoven, kreeg “Het Gouden Peertje” van Round One Ventures. Ook de start-ups erkennen de toegevoegde waarde van de Brainport regio. “Het levendige eco-systeem van Brainport Eindhoven heeft een significante impact gehad op onze groep,” aldus Bram Cappers van Tibo Energy.

Being voted as one of the most promising start-ups in the Brainport region, that has meaning. Whereas on average ten to twenty percent of start-ups are permanently successful, for former winners of the Gerard & Anton Awards, this is around 75 percent. On Thursday, August 31, ten new winners proudly accepted their awards. To continue investing in the unique strength of Brainport Eindhoven, the health technology company invited them to an annual Gerard & Anton dinner at the Philips Museum.

Founders of innovation and entrepreneurship in Eindhoven

From regenerative implants to virtual colleagues based on AI, to technology to train your brain: all winners of the Gerard & Anton Awards 2023 were labelled as innovative and entrepreneurial. Principles that have also been synonymous with the brothers Gerard and Anton themselves since the start of Philips in 1891.

Add to that the socially engaged nature of the entrepreneurs, and the foundation for Gerard & Anton Awards is established. Philips has been a key partner in the event since the awards' inception in 2014. "It fits into our DNA that the more experienced companies help start-ups where necessary. In this way we try to further stimulate innovation and entrepreneurship in the region together," said Sylvia van Es, President Philips Netherlands. To strengthen this community, Philips is inviting the winners to an annual Gerard & Anton dinner at the Philips Museum. That will be an opportunity to learn from each other and from leaders active in the world of high-tech in an informal setting. "In this way we want to continue to invest together in the unique strength of Brainport, building together on what once started with Gerard."

Unique strength of Brainport

Research by Innovation Origins and Strategy Unit shows that, on average, two to three out of ten start-ups have been around for more than five years. Among the winners of the Gerard & Anton Awards since 2014, this applies to eight out of ten start-ups. The explanation may lie in the unique strength of Brainport: a network of cooperating companies in high-tech, education and government. "We already know the start-ups from our network. That makes us able to judge them not only from paper, but simply through daily social interaction," said Bert-Jan Woertman, founder of the Gerard & Anton Awards and Director of Mikrocentrum. 

Ten new winners

The 2023 winners are: Antennex, VivArt-X, Integer Technologies, Mantispectra, GrAI Matter Labs, Gilbert Technologies, Alphabeats, FononTech, Neople, and Tibo Energy. They received their Gerard & Anton Award at the High Tech Campus in Eindhoven. In addition, there was a special award for Pakt: this promising student team operating from TU Delft and TU Eindhoven received "The Golden Pear" from Round One Ventures. Start-ups also recognize the added value of the Brainport region. "The vibrant eco-system of Brainport Eindhoven has had a significant impact on our group," said Bram Cappers of Tibo Energy.
