Studenten staan over het algemeen niet bekend als vroege vogels op zaterdag. Toch liepen op 25 maart om negen uur 84 studenten door de poorten van de Philips Best Campus. Zij hadden hun wekker gezet om deel te nemen aan de jaarlijkse Philips Student Hackathon en te strijden om de beste real-life business solution.

Philips in Best de ideale locatie voor de Hackathon

Als een van de grootste productie- en innovatielocaties van Philips brengt de Best Campus onderzoek, productontwikkeling en productie op één locatie samen. De Campus is ook de thuisbasis van het Customer Experience Center, waar de wereldwijde innovaties van Philips worden getoond. De campus brengt alle 3.500 medewerkers met elkaar in verbinding om hen te ondersteunen bij het samenwerken aan de toekomst van de gezondheidszorgtechnologie. Op deze zaterdag konden de 84 studenten precies dat doen: aan levensechte uitdagingen voor het bedrijfsleven werken en de vaardigheden testen die ze momenteel op de universiteit ontwikkelen.

Een dag in een multinational werken

Na de Brabathon van vorig jaar, waar studenten van 6 Brabantse Universiteiten deelnamen aan de Philips hackathon, werden dit jaar studenten uit het hele land uitgenodigd om mee te doen aan de Student hackathon. "In deze Hackathon ontdekken studenten hoe het is om in een multinational te werken en kunnen ze zichzelf ontwikkelen", zegt Mandy Waber, HR Business Partner bij de Best Campus. "Voor Philips is dit een geweldige kans om te leren van deze toekomstige generatie en gezien te worden als potentiële toekomstige werkgever."

Oplossingen voor een betere gezondheidszorg én een betere wereld

Na een rondleiding in de fabriek en het Customer Experience Center kregen de studenten business cases gepresenteerd van Magnetic Resonance (MR), Image Guided Therapy (IGT), Supply Chain, de Best site en Circular Equipment (CE). In de Circular Equipment challenge werden de studenten gevraagd ideeën te bedenken om de circulariteit in de MRI-sector te vergroten, om de ambitieuze doelstellingen van het bedrijf op het gebied van circulariteit te realiseren. Over 10 jaar moet 30 procent van de omzet bestaan uit circulaire producten en diensten, groeiend van 15 procent in 2022. "Het was geweldig om te zien hoe de studenten in staat waren om in een korte periode doordachte en innovatieve concepten te ontwikkelen", zegt Luc Lenaerts, die in de Hackathon-jury de bedrijfscategorie Philips Circular Equipment vertegenwoordigt. "Overgaan op servicegerichte bedrijfsmodellen, het benutten van regionale herstelmogelijkheden en het creëren van datamodellen om betrokkenheid van leveranciers mogelijk te maken zijn allemaal geweldige voorbeelden en kunnen zeker bijdragen aan het bereiken van onze circulariteitsambities."

Win-win

Nadat de studenten hun cases aan de jury hadden voorgelegd, werden drie teams beloond met een prijs, variërend van VIP-tickets voor een PSV voetbalwedstrijd in het Philips Stadion tot kaartjes voor het Rijksmuseum. "Het was geweldig om aan deze uitdagingen te werken in deze leuke sfeer. Ik heb echt goede inzichten gekregen over hoe het is om in een multinational als Philips te werken," aldus een van de studenten. Aan het eind van de dag werden de studenten getrakteerd op een typisch studentendiner bestaande uit pizza en drankjes, waarna ze terugkeerden naar huis door heel Nederland. Dit keer zonder dat ze de volgende dag hun alarm hoeven te zetten.

Students are generally not known for being early birds on a Saturday. Yet, on Saturday March 25th at nine o’clock, 84 students walked through the gates of the Philips Best campus. They had set their alarm to be part of the annual Philips Student Hackathon and compete for the best real-life business solution.

Philips in Best ideal host for the Hackathon

Being one of Philips' largest production and innovation sites, the Best Campus brings together research, product development and production in one location. The Campus is also home to the Customer Experience Center, which showcases Philips’ worldwide innovations. The campus is designed to connect all 3,500 employees, to support them in working together on the future of healthcare technology. On this Saturday, the 84 students got to do just that: work on real-life business challenges and test the skills they are currently developing at the university.

Work in a multinational for a day

Following the Brabathon of last year, where students from 6 Universities in Brabant participated in the Philips hackathon, this year students from all over the country were invited to join the Student hackathon. “In this Hackathon, students get to discover what it is like to work in a multinational company and develop their business skills”, says Mandy Waber, HR Business Partner at the Best Campus. “For Philips, this is a great opportunity to learn from this future generation and be recognized as a potential future employer.”

Solutions for better healthcare and a better world

After a tour in the factory and the Customer Experience Center, the students were presented with businesses cases from Magnetic Resonance (MR), Image Guided Therapy (IGT), Supply Chain, the Best site and Circular Equipment (CE). In the Circular Equipment challenge, students were asked to come up with ideas to increase circularity in the MRI sector, to meet the company’s ambitious circularity goals. In 10 years, 30 percent of sales should consist of circular products and services, growing from 15% in 2022. “It was great to see how the students were able to develop thought-provoking and innovative concepts in a short period,” says Luc Lenaerts, representing business category Philips Circular Equipment in the Hackathon jury. "Moving to service-based business models, leveraging regional recovery capabilities and creating data-models to enable supplier involvement are all great examples and can definitely contribute to reaching our circularity ambitions.”

Win-win

After the students pitched their cases to the jury, three teams were awarded with prizes, ranging from VIP tickets to a PSV football match in the Philips Stadium to tickets to the Rijksmuseum. “It was great to work competitively in this nice atmosphere. I truly got some good insights on what it is like to work in a multinational company like Philips,” according to one of the students. At the end of the day, the students were treated with a typical student diner consisting of pizza and drinks, after which they returned to their homes all over the Netherlands. This time, without an early wake up to look forward to the next day.
