Every first Thursday of the month, you can visit the museum in the evening with Philips Museum Late. The museum is then open until 21.00 and there is a special programme. On 5 September, admire an exclusive screening of the documentary ANS, Nederlands eerste ruimteavontuur (ANS, Netherlands’ first space adventure).
In the late 1960s, Jan Borgman (founder of Ruimteonderzoek Groningen) wanted to build a telescope that could take UV photos of space. To get this telescope into space, he needs a satellite, but seeking international help to build the satellite did not yield any results. So, he approached Philips and Fokker and together they built the first Dutch satellite!
ANS was the first satellite to have a reprogrammable on-board computer. All the electronics were hand-crafted by Philips. In 1974, the Astronomical Dutch Satellite (ANS) was launched with the help of NASA. ANS was far ahead of its time with this advanced technology, and NASA was impressed by this.
The documentary highlights, among other things, the role and contribution of Philips in building ANS. But you will also discover what is so special about ANS and what discoveries have been made by this satellite in space. Documentary filmmakers Jasper Huizinga and Lotte Veltman interview the scientists and technicians who contributed to the satellite. You will see original footage of, for example, the construction, the launch of the satellite and some amazing animations by Michiel Hoving.
Day: Thursday 5 September 2024 Full = full! Buy your tickets for ANS, the Netherlands' first space adventure online if you want to be sure of a seat.
Time: 19.30 to 20.30
Cost: Attending the screening costs 3 euros, including free consumption (to be consumed in the museum café). Please note that you also pay for admission to the museum.
The documentary is in Dutch with English subtitles.
Tickets for the ANS documentary on Thursday 5 September are sold out.
