Philips en UMC Utrecht hebben een intentieverklaring ondertekend om samen te werken aan innovaties binnen patiëntmonitoring. Het doel van deze samenwerking is het creëren van een Smart Healing Environment waarin slimme technologie, gebruiksvriendelijke interfaces en intelligente alarmmanagementsystemen bijdragen aan betere zorg en een rustiger zorgomgeving voor patiënten en zorgverleners.

Grote hoeveelheid alarmen, uitdaging voor zorgverlener

In moderne ziekenhuisomgevingen worden zorgverleners geconfronteerd met een grote hoeveelheid signalen en alarmen van verschillende apparaten. Veel van die alarmen vereisen geen directe actie van zorgverleners, wat kan leiden tot alarmmoeheid bij het personeel en stress bij patiënten. UMC Utrecht en Philips willen daarom samen in de toekomst innovatieve oplossingen ontwikkelen die helpen om deze overvloed aan signalen te verminderen en de relevantie van alarmmeldingen te vergroten.

De samenwerking richt zich op drie pijlers:

• Service-oriented Device Connectivity (SDC)-alarmmanagement: Implementeren en verbeteren van systemen en werkwijzen om het aantal hoorbare alarmen in het ziekenhuis te verminderen.
• Slimme analyses en algoritmes:

o Ontwerpen, implementeren en verbeteren van innovaties voor het prioriteren en filteren van alarmen, zodat zorgverleners meer actiegerichte signalen ontvangen.

o Gebruikmaken van data-analyse en algoritmes om tekenen van verslechtering bij patiënten eerder te herkennen en zo mogelijk eerder te kunnen ingrijpen

• UX/UI en conceptontwikkeling: Ontwikkelen van prototypes en gebruiksvriendelijkere interfaces voor patiëntmonitoringsystemen die aansluiten bij de werkwijzen van zorgprofessionals.

In de samenwerking levert Philips technologische expertise en ontwikkelkracht, terwijl UMC Utrecht zorgt voor klinische inbreng en toetsing, zodat de oplossingen optimaal aansluiten bij de dagelijkse praktijkbehoefte van zorgprofessionals en patiënten.

Philips and UMC Utrecht have signed a letter of intent to collaborate on innovations in patient monitoring. The aim of this partnership is to create a Smart Healing Environment in which smart technology, user-friendly interfaces, and intelligent alarm management systems contribute to better care and a calmer environment for both patients and healthcare professionals.

High number of alarms, caregiver’s challenge

In modern hospital settings, healthcare professionals are confronted with a large number of signals and alarms from different devices. Many of these alarms do not require immediate action, which can lead to alarm fatigue among staff and stress for patients. UMC Utrecht and Philips therefore intend to jointly develop innovative solutions that help reduce this overload of signals and increase the relevance of alarm notifications.

The collaboration focuses on three key pillars:

• Service-oriented Device Connectivity (SDC -)based alarm management:  Improve interoperability between devices and simplify workflows through the implementation of service-oriented device connectivity (SDC) standards to reduce the number of audible alarms in hospitals.
• Smart analytics and algorithms:

o Designing, implementing, and refining innovations to prioritize and filter alarms, so caregivers receive more actionable alerts.

o Using data analytics and algorithms to detect early signs of patient deterioration and enable timely intervention.

• UX/UI and concept development: Developing prototypes and more user-friendly interfaces for patient monitoring systems that align with the workflows of healthcare professionals.

In this collaboration, Philips contributes technological expertise and development capabilities, while UMC Utrecht provides clinical input and validation to ensure that the solutions meet the real-world needs of both healthcare professionals and patients.

Foundation for continued innovation

The letter of intent builds on the existing collaboration between UMC Utrecht and Philips, now extending it to include Hospital Patient Monitoring. In the coming years, both parties will work to further develop, validate, and implement smart patient monitoring in clinical practice.
