The need for speed at Red Cross Netherlands

Can you accelerate analysis of field data so that frontline staff don’t feel their input is disappearing into an ‘information black hole’?

The Philips Foundation, a registered charity, helps the Dutch Red Cross tackle some of its more stubborn problems. One of these is the length of time - typically six weeks - it takes for information from the field to be evaluated back in the Netherlands. For people working out in crisis areas, this can be exceptionally frustrating. It could even cost lives. So we’re looking for your bright ideas on this. How could you automate analysis of field data to spot anomalies or correlations? Or establish platforms for external collaboration so that selected people worldwide could process the data much quicker?

Data

Please come to the event and you will get the data samples then and there. Please note that all submissions need to be open source for the Dutch Red Cross. If you’re interested in a data sample prior to the event, please contact Hanne Österberg: hanne.osterberg@philips.com

Special Prize*

The Netherlands Red Cross (NLRC) and the Philips Foundation have teamed up to solve key challenges in pre-natal and data collection in the field. The NLRC will host the winning team in the Hague to experience an inspiring day of history and compassion. The group will be welcomed at the NLRC headquarters for lunch and a visit to the NLRC War Archives. This archive contains documents about 1.5 million people that were kept in war camps in Europe and Asia, which were gathered from the effort of tracing missing persons after the war.

After this powerful experience, the winners will be taken to visit the nearby Humanity House for a private tour of the museum. Humanity House raises discussion about humanitarian themes to increase understanding, inspiring people to contribute positively to a life of peace and freedom for everybody. The museum allows visitors to ‘embark on a journey through the museum and see, hear and experience personally what it must feel like to have to survive in an area affected by conflict or disaster.’

* When choosing this challenge you can only win the above prize. Prize money goes only to the tracks; City Life, Health, Travel, Transport, Work and Entrepreneurship.
