Ruim 2.000 leerlingen uit groep 6, 7 en 8 presenteerden tijdens de jaarlijkse PSV Brainport Scholenchallenge hun ideeën voor de toekomst. Ook tijdens deze vijfde editie veranderde het Philips Stadion in een plek vol creatieve oplossingen, maatschappelijke vraagstukken en verrassende innovaties. Van slimme hulpmiddelen voor ziekenhuizen tot ideeën die duurzaamheid en gezondheid combineren: de kinderen lieten zien hoe onbevangen en oplossingsgericht zij naar de wereld kijken. “Kinderen kijken totaal anders naar problemen dan volwassenen”, zegt Philip Scholts.“ Daardoor komen ze vaak met ideeën waar wij zelf niet op zouden komen.” 

De kracht van een frisse blik

De challenge, georganiseerd door de Brainport-partners van PSV, draait om meer dan alleen de eindpresentaties in het Philips Stadion. Ook dit jaar worden leerlingen uitgedaagd om samen oplossingen te bedenken voor maatschappelijke uitdagingen en ontdekken ze onderweg hoe technologie, samenwerking en creativiteit elkaar kunnen versterken. Specifiek voor Philips werden kinderen uitgedaagd na te denken over de toekomst van de gezondheidszorg. Juist die unieke blik van kinderen zorgt vaak voor mooie perspectieven, ziet ook jurylid Katja van Steen: “Kinderen denken vaak heel sterk vanuit hun eigen ervaringen. Daardoor komen ze met oplossingen die niet alleen creatief zijn, maar ook heel menselijk aanvoelen.”

Technologie met aandacht voor de mens

Dat was op veel plekken in het stadion zichtbaar. Zo bedacht een groep leerlingen een variant op de klassieke Tamagotchi die jonge patiënten helpt herinneren wanneer het tijd is om hun medicijnen in te nemen. Een ander team richtte zich juist op de spanning rondom ziekenhuisbezoeken. Omdat veel kinderen bang zijn voor een prik, bedachten zij een manier om de arts tijdelijk te veranderen in PSV-mascotte Phoxy, compleet met dansje, om de ervaring minder spannend te maken.

Misschien wel het meest persoonlijke idee kwam van een team waarvan één van de leerlingen zelf recent in het ziekenhuis had gelegen na een ongeluk. Zij bedachten een armband waaraan kinderen tijdens hun opname kralen konden rijgen, waarbij iedere kraal stond voor een bepaalde emotie. Het kleurrijke sieraad moest jonge patiënten helpen om gevoelens zichtbaar te maken, maar bood tegelijkertijd ook afleiding tijdens een moeilijke periode. “Door dat soort voorbeelden zag je dat ze echt nadachten over wat een kind in zo’n situatie nodig heeft”, zegt jurylid Sara Vincentie. “Daardoor gingen de ideeën niet alleen over technologie, maar ook over comfort, afleiding en emoties.”

Ruimte om talent te ontdekken

Niet alleen de creativiteit en het inlevingsvermogen van de leerlingen maakte indruk op de juryleden, maar ook de manier waarop zij hun ideeën uitwerkten en presenteerden. “Sommige teams hadden echt nagedacht over hoe iemand hun idee in de praktijk zou gebruiken”, zegt Sara Vincentie. “Tot aan knopjes, gebruiksgemak en kleine details werd erover nagedacht. Dat maakte veel concepten verrassend doordacht.”

Volgens de jury laat de scholenchallenge zien hoe snel kinderen zich ontwikkelen wanneer zij de ruimte krijgen om samen aan echte maatschappelijke vraagstukken te werken. “Het gaat niet alleen om het eindresultaat”, zegt Philip Scholts. “Leerlingen werken samen, bedenken oplossingen en presenteren hun ideeën. In dat proces ontdekken ze waar hun talent ligt.”

Naast een bijzondere dag in het stadion maken leerlingen tijdens de challenge op jonge leeftijd kennis met technologie, innovatie en samenwerken in de praktijk. Daarmee draagt het initiatief bij aan de toekomst van de Brainport-regio, waar technologische ontwikkeling en innovatie een steeds grotere rol spelen.

More than 2,000 students from grades 4, 5 and 6 of primary school presented their ideas for the future during the annual PSV Brainport School Challenge. During this fifth edition, the Philips Stadium once again transformed into a place filled with creative solutions, social challenges and surprising innovations. From smart tools for hospitals to ideas combining sustainability and health, the children showed how openly and solution-oriented they view the world. “Children look at problems completely differently from adults,” says Philip Scholts. “That often leads to ideas we would never have thought of ourselves.” that are not only creative, but also feel very human.”

The power of a fresh perspective

The challenge, organized by PSV’s Brainport partners, is about much more than the final presentations at the Philips Stadium. Once again, this year, students were encouraged to work together on solutions for social challenges while discovering along the way how technology, collaboration and creativity can strengthen one another. Specifically for Philips, the children were challenged to think about the future of healthcare. It is precisely this unique perspective of children that often creates valuable insights, according to jury member Katja van Steen: “Children tend to think strongly from their own experiences. As a result, they come up with solutions that are not only creative, but also feel very human.”

Technology with a human touch

That became visible throughout the stadium. One group of students developed a variation of the classic Tamagotchi to help young patients remember when it is time to take their medication. Another team focused on reducing the stress surrounding hospital visits. Since many children are afraid of injections, they came up with a way to temporarily transform the doctor into PSV mascot Phoxy, complete with a dance, to make the experience less intimidating.

Perhaps the most personal idea came from a team in which one of the students had recently been hospitalized after an accident. They designed a bracelet on which children could string beads during their stay in hospital, with each bead representing a specific emotion. The colorful bracelet was intended to help young patients express their feelings, while also offering distraction during a difficult period. “Examples like these showed that the students genuinely thought about what a child needs in that situation,” says jury member Sara Vincentie. “Their ideas were not just about technology, but also about comfort, distraction and emotions.”

Creating space to discover talent

The jury members were impressed not only by the students’ creativity and empathy, but also by the way they developed and presented their ideas. “Some teams had really thought about how someone would use their idea in practice,” says Sara Vincentie. “They considered everything from buttons and ease of use to the smallest details. That made many concepts surprisingly well thought out.

”According to the jury, the Schools Challenge demonstrates how quickly children develop when they are given the opportunity to work together on real social issues. “It’s not just about the final result,” says Philip Scholts. “Students collaborate, come up with solutions and present their ideas. In that process, they discover where their talents lie.”

In addition to experiencing a special day at the stadium, students are introduced at a young age to technology, innovation and collaboration in practice. In this way, the initiative also contributes to the future of the Brainport region, where technological development and innovation are playing an increasingly important role.
