Primeur in Bernhoven: nieuwste CT-scanner van Nederland zorgt voor veel beter onderzoek

Het Brabants Dagblad bezocht het ziekenhuis Bernhoven in Uden, waar als eerste in Nederland de nieuwste CT-scanner (CT 5300) van Philips in gebruik is genomen. De nieuwe scanner ondersteunt het scanproces en de zorgverleners met allerlei AI-toepassingen.

Slimmer door AI, beter voor de patiënt

AI helpt om te zorgen voor beelden direct correct georiënteerd en scherper zijn. Voor zorgverleners betekent dit minder handmatige correcties, snellere diagnoses, en minder gebruik van contrastvloeistof en straling. Klinisch fysicus Rob Houben zegt hierover: “We stellen sneller een diagnose én het is prettiger voor de patiënt.”

Dertig scans per dag en meer aandacht

Met minder handelingen en snellere verwerking dankzij AI kunnen er nu zo’n dertig scans per dag worden uitgevoerd. Bovendien gaan de nieuwe scanners langer mee, dankzij software-updates en slimme sensoren die onderhoud voorspellen. Sofie Kampshof, Modality Team Lead CT in de Benelux, vertelt: “Daardoor hoeven onderzoeken minder vaak geannuleerd te worden.” Voor laborant Natalie Jochems zit de grootste winst in het contact met de patiënt: “Ik hoef minder heen en weer te lopen. Daardoor kan ik er echt zijn voor de patiënt. Dat zie je terug in hun ontspanning.”

Sneller en comfortabeler scannen

Waar vroeger een CT-scan 45 minuten duurde en tientallen ademcommando’s vereiste, is dat nu teruggebracht naar enkele seconden. Jochems – al 37 jaar werkzaam in het vak – noemt het “een wereld van verschil”. De scanner draait met een snelheid van drie keer per seconde om de patiënt heen en maakt snel scherpe beelden.

“Er draait qua gewicht eigenlijk een kleine auto om de patiënt heen”, legt klinisch fysicus Rob Houben uit. „En dat zo’n drie keer per seconde.” Daarbij worden heel snel beelden gemaakt. Jochems: „Een patiënt hoeft nog maar zeven seconden de adem in te houden, soms zelfs maar twee. Dat is voor zieke patiënten echt fijn. Zeker bij longaandoeningen.”

Brabants Dagblad visited Bernhoven Hospital in Uden, where the latest Philips CT scanner (CT 5300) has been put into use - the first of its kind in the Netherlands. This new scanner supports the scanning process and caregivers with a wide range of AI-powered features.

Smarter through AI, better for the patient

AI helps ensure that images are automatically sharper and correctly oriented. For healthcare professionals, this means fewer manual adjustments, faster diagnoses, and less use of contrast agents and radiation. Clinical physicist Rob Houben explains: “We’re able to diagnose faster, and it’s more comfortable for the patient.”

Thirty scans a day and greater attention to the patient

With fewer steps and faster processing thanks to AI, the scanner now enables around thirty scans a day. It also lasts longer due to software updates and smart sensors that predict when maintenance is needed. Sofie Kampshof, Modality Team Lead CT in the Benelux, says: “This helps reduce the number of canceled procedures.”

For lab technician Natalie Jochems, the biggest gain is in patient contact: “I don’t have to walk back and forth as much. It allows me to really be present for the patient. You can see it in how much more relaxed they are.”

Faster and more comfortable scanning

Where a CT scan used to take 45 minutes and dozens of breath-hold instructions, it now takes only a few seconds. Jochems - who has worked in the field for 37 years - calls it “a world of difference.”

“The scanner weighs about as much as a small car and rotates around the patient three times per second,” explains clinical physicist Rob Houben. “That allows us to generate sharp images very quickly.” Jochems adds: “Patients now only have to hold their breath for seven seconds, sometimes as little as two. That makes a big difference, especially for patients with lung conditions.”
