Als juryvoorzitter Roy Jakobs het podium betreedt, kun je een speld horen vallen in Theater Rotterdam. Naar dit moment hebben de acht finalisten van de Philips Innovation Award de afgelopen 4 maanden toegeleefd. Na een avondvullend programma volgt dan eindelijk het verlossende woord voor de studenten: de winnaars ExCulture en Plense Technologies gaan naar huis met de Innovator en Rough Diamond Award.

Een breed scala aan wereldverbeteraars

Van milieubewust ruimtereizen, tot schimmels gebruiken om je kleren duurzamer te verven, en duurzame energie halen uit de horizontale beweging van de golven. De diversiteit aan ideeën van de ondernemers geeft aan hoe jong Nederland in de breedste zin wil bijdragen aan het verduurzamen van de maatschappij. “Ik ben blij te zien dat het thema duurzaamheid zo sterk naar voren komt in deze editie van de awards,” aldus Roy Jakobs, CEO van Philips en voorzitter van de jury. “Duurzaamheid in combinatie met disruptief denken hebben we nodig om de wereld beter te maken.”

Luisteren en leren van planten

Na de acht pitches in de categorieen Innovator Award en Rough Diamond Award, trok de jury zich terug om tot een conclusie te komen. Ze beoordeelden de pitches op basis van het innovatieve karakter, de uitvoerbaarheid en het team achter het idee. “Het werd een pittig debat tussen gepassioneerde juryleden, maar we zijn tot een goede conclusie gekomen,” aldus Roy Jakobs. De Rough Diamond Award en een bedrag van 10.000 euro werd gewonnen door Plense Technologies, opgericht als spin-off van de Delft University of Technology. Door middel van echografie, willen de jonge ondernemers ‘luisteren en leren’ naar de behoeften van planten om op die manier de teelt efficiënter en effectiever maken.

Een duurzaam alternatief voor heparine

Een op de drie patiënten in het ziekenhuis moet behandeld worden met heparine om bloedstolling te voorkomen. Jaarlijks zijn er een miljard varkens nodig om aan de globale behoefte van heparine te kunnen voorzien. Om de afhankelijkheid van dieren te verminderen, heeft ExCulture een fermentatie methode ontwikkeld die schaalbaar is op lange termijn. De pitch leverde hen de Innovator Award op en 50.000 euro om hun idee verder te ontwikkelen. “Dit bedrag helpt ons om ons product verder te karakteriseren en te valideren en een stap dichterbij marktintroductie te komen,” aldus de winnaars Aisling Foley en Ilaria Poledri.

De grootste student ondernemersprijs in Nederland

De Philips Innovation Awards is de grootste student- ondernemersprijs van Nederland, georganiseerd voor en door studenten. In een periode van vier maanden ontwikkelen de studenten hun idee van een one-pager tot een volledig businessplan. Deelnemende studenten krijgen deskundige begeleiding, toegang tot een groot netwerk van investeerders en persoonlijke trainingsbegeleiding voordat ze het podium van de finale betreden.

Having made their final case to the jury for why they should go home with one of the awards, the winning teams are announced: ExCulture and Plense Technologies win the Innovator and Rough Diamond Awards. 

Listening and learning from plants

After eight pitches in the Innovator and Rough Diamond categories, the jury retreated to reach a conclusion. They judged the pitches based on the innovative nature, the feasibility of execution and the team behind the idea. “It took some tough debates and passionate exchanges of the jury, but we came to a conclusion,” said CEO of Philips and chair of the jury, Roy Jakobs. Plense Technologies, founded as a spin-off of Delft University of Technology, won the Rough Diamond Award and 10,000 euros. Through ultrasound, the young entrepreneurs want to “listen and learn" from the needs of plants to make plant cultivation more efficient and effective.

Disrupting the heparin market

One in three patients in the hospital need to be treated with heparin to prevent blood clotting. One billion pigs are needed annually to meet this global need. To reduce dependence on animals, ExCulture has developed a fermentation method that is scalable over the long term. Their business case earned them the Innovator Award and 50,000 euros to further develop their idea. "This amount will help us to further characterize and validate our product and get one step closer to market introduction," said winners Aisling Foley and Ilaria Poledri.

Wide range of game-changing ideas

From more sustainable space travel, to using fungi to replace synthetic textile dyes, to extracting sustainable energy from the horizontal movement of waves, the diversity of ideas from the entrepreneurs participating shows how students in the Netherlands want to contribute to making society more sustainable. "I am pleased to see that the theme of sustainability is so outspoken in this edition of the awards," said Roy Jakobs. “Sustainable and disruptive thinking is what we need to make the world a better place."

Largest student entrepreneurship awards in The Netherlands

The Philips Innovation Awards is the largest student entrepreneurship awards in the Netherlands, organized by and for students. Over a period of four months, the students develop their idea from a one-pager to a business plan. Students participating receive expert coaching, access to a large network of investors and personal training guidance.
