“Wow, 125 years of Philips! The emotion that came up to me when reading this article was immediately the pride that comes along with. And a special personal feeling which touches the deepest of my memory. I joined Philips some 18 years ago, with a very special background:
As a young woman who grew up in a very traditional family in China, I had no permission from my parents to come to the Netherlands and pursue next step of my life in the 90’s. Reason: My father believed that I would not survive in West World without being engaged in unmoral occupation ( do not laugh, China was at that time still under influence of lots of propagandas’) . But I was determined and set further my steps. The consequence: My family cut the relationship with me ever since I made up my mind. 1994 I came alone to the Netherlands. To win back the contact with my family ( especially my father who is dominating the family), I knew that the first thing I need to do is to find a Job at Philips. Why Philips? Because Philips was one of the few known Dutch companies in China at that time, and the one in the eye of my father: a very decent company. I therefore applied my job at Philips as soon as there was a possibility: I gave up my fantastic job at DSM and joined Philips in 1998 and ever since then I have been serving Philips at different divisions. And guess what: Yes, after 5 years no contact with my family in China, in 1999 after I got my permanent job contract with Philips, my father saw finally the evidence that he was wrong. He accepted the contact with me again, following up with contact with all my family!
5 years without any contact with my family and I finally won them back by being able to work at Philips and thus demonstrating that I am in-dependent and working at a decent company. I promised my father that I would stay working at Philips as long as I can on his dying bed, 10th Sep. 2010. He has enormous respect for Philips as a company and he wanted that I would be a part of that great company. So is also my own will: I am proud of my work and I am proud of my company! I feel I am a part of that great thing! Here is why I am sending you this mail, a personal story that has to do with the pride and respect from someone thousand kilometers away at the other side of the world, and by his believe, more people are affected, very positively.”
